Mind Mapping for Blaugust (Brainstorming Week)

2010-11-14_101608

Kicking off week number two of with the topic of (BRAINSTORMING) has been interesting as I’ve seen topics all over the board so far!  With that said I have been wracking the brain on what to write about today!

I get a lot of questions around my system of note-taking, my sticky notes, and how I’ve used them to map out whatever I’m writing.   So today’s post is all about brain dumping and mind mapping.

If you are anything like me I’m sure you at one point and time struggle with the idea of what to write when to write, how to write and why would I write! Whether it’s a blog post or book….that can be a big hill to tackle on where to start.  For me, I finally just made the plunge and started writing, and a few years ago jumped in with the #NANOWRIMO group which was crazy good for getting with other writers and learning from them.

This is really where my book idea came to life as I was challenged by other writers to just jump in and begin.  Even though I had no idea really where to start, or what things looked like at the time; I did learn a system and have enjoyed the process of getting to where I am today.

A lot of people don’t write a book or blog post as they simply don’t know how to start.  They possess the idea for a book or a blog, but they don’t know what to do with it. They possess an idea for a book, but they don’t know what to do with it. They can’t imagine how they get from initial idea to a published blog post or that finished manuscript which isn’t a small feat at all so don’t think I’m playing this down.

It wasn’t until I began using the “Brain Dump” method to get my ideas that were just floating around that space in my head, to the paper so I could have a visual.  Some call this mind mapping, but for me, this is just an old fashioned Brain Dump.  Whatever you like to call it doesn’t really matter, just the methodology and way it’s used. Brain dumping will take you from a few grand book ideas to a detailed book outline you can work from to make a manuscript.  This ultimately becomes the go-to place for when you need a guide to take you from start to finish of this novel you’ve dived into.

It’s funny how our brains work as we have an analytical and creative side, so mapping those ideas out for a book or blog post when thinking about that can be tough.  Basically, mind mapping allows you to bring the two sides of your brain together in one location so that all the thoughts and information are easily visual and accessible. Once you’ve learned how to wrangle those thoughts it’s time to take a look at the actual brain dump.  This is the point where the thought has to become a reality.  So….how do you make the brain dump happen?

My favorites and staples when writing is using a large whiteboard to map out my ideas and plot pieces of the story together.  My journal is always a go-to, though lately it’s littered with sticky notes from ideas I need to go back and form into the story section I need it in.  Another favorite is the sticky note and poster board which is always fun for me as you get to move the sticky notes around and write on the poster board as well.

Examples below of my “Plot Board” and “Whiteboard”

On the left is an old push pin board my wife used to use that is currently littered with sticky notes which are all major, and minor plot points of the book. On the right is a large whiteboard that I use frequently…again with the sticky notes.  Each of the sticky notes on the whiteboard represents a portion of the book such as chapter, plot, sub-plot, character info, etc and where they fit into the timeline of the book.  May seem bonkers but visually it has helped me write clearer, cleaner and faster then I ever had before.

Maybe this is a super writing nerd kinda thing, but this is very relaxing and enjoyable for me and that’s why I’m writing this post.  I’m hoping this sparks some ideas for you as well and lights a fire so you can get to moving on that great book idea you have.

Think of the brain like this and hopefully it will help you picture what needs to happen.

Brain Dump Process

  • Creative Right Brain is where the ideas flow from and all the magic happens.  The fun stuff clicks on this side of the brain.
  • Analytical Left Brain is where the organization of all that creative material you just dumped to the paper happens.  This is where the structure of the book comes from and where your – table of contents and outline of the book will look like.

If you’ve lined everything out and keep a good record of the book and use this process then you can produce some very detailed information and great chapter outlines for your book.

Now let’s look back at the Sticky Notes and how they will help you map this book out. This is the easiest way to make a mind map of your book.

My Favorite Mind Mapping Process:

  • Grab yourself a large poster board or poster boards, or even a large whiteboard will work. Get yourself a big stack of sticky notes….multi-colored is what I like to use as I color coordinate topics to specific colors.
  • Take a single sticky note in the middle of the poster board and write your topic on it, or a book title, just depending on what you are working on.
  • Write all the related topics you can think of on sticky notes and place them anywhere on the poster board.  Sounds like chaos I know, but don’t worry about where you place them, or about organizing them, unless you are absolutely sure the topics relate to one another.
  • Fill the board with as many topics as you can possibly think of as this is the “Brain Dump” phase and when you think you’re done, look again as you will more than likely come up with more topics after taking a break, or a step back.
  • At this point, I like to take a picture of the board for reference purposes in case I have to take a break or get pulled away for something.  They are called sticky notes, not permanently held in spot notes.
  • Ok now comes the organization of the topics.  The analytical side of the brain is ready to be worked right? Look for related topics. Pick up the notes and move them around. Take a close look at what you have grouped together as they just might become the chapters of your book. More than likely, this will be the groups with the most information lumped together.  Just remember this is your book and your board so move things around how you feel fits best, and don’t be afraid to break apart groups into multiple chapters if one is too large. Just make sure you use a different colored sticky note to mark that chapter and don’t forget to name the chapter.
  • Use each of the sticky notes you have grouped together under a chapter as a sub-topic that you want to write about in that chapter.  This is where the fun begins as writing guides and book maps are a must at this point.  Sub-plots of a story can make things confusing if you don’t.

Hopefully, these few tips and my insanity have sparked some creativity for you all.  Mind mapping for me is a blast and brings a lot of enjoyment to my writing.  It takes a lot to get a story from your brain to that paper.  Sit down, start slow, find something that works for you and enjoy the process of making the next best book or blog post!

In this episode: We cover the recent resurgence of players in the Destiny community, how the state of Destiny is keeping those players engaged, and finishing with the top things we are looking forward to when Shadowkeep hits in September

Show Notes

  • Resurgence –
    • Since the release of Forsaken we have seen a steady decline in the want to play the game – a slight bump in players as new content was released but still a decline
    • But then 3 things took place that combined has revitalized the community to new levels.
      • 1.) Bungie split from Activision
        • This was a huge want from the community to finally split from the “greedy corporates” at Activision
        • Bungie is now free to build a game the way they want to
        • This does not mean Eververse will go away as to keep producing “free” content you need some way to keep the lights on
      • 2.) All new items and content announced for Shadowkeep
        • New Light
          • Some people may say that Free-to-play is a  sign of a game failing but the way that Bungie is implementing is more like a demo but people will still be able to play multiplayer with friends
        • Cross-Save
          • Every multi-platform game to date has wanted this.  We all have friends on different platforms and want to play with them without having to start over.  Cross-save fixes this and will be a continued plus for new players coming into Destiny.
          • This also pairs REALLY well with Destiny 2 on Stadia too as we now have an on the go version of the game that we can just continue playing our characters
        • Transmogrification sorta – AKA Armour 2.0
          • Just yes – we finally get to wear the gear we want and slot the stats we want
        • Moon’s Haunted – Story
          • We are going back to the Moon!
          • Looks like we may go up against some ghosts of the past
      • 3.) Season of Opulence
        • The biggest item that has hit with this season has been the Menagerie.  A multi-boss raid-lite that has built-in matchmaking
        • Along with this, and with benefit from a bug, this event has been a go-to grind because of the loot rewards and the ability to craft the weapons how you want it giving the player just the right amount of control.
  • State of the Game
    • People are loving the grind for all things PVE
    • PVP is not in a horrible spot but still is rough
    • There is so much to do if you have not been keeping up and so much content to go through but almost all of it is really good and worth the work
    • So much lore to work through and very engaging storylines to keep up with
    • -Personal Experience-
  • Tops items we are looking forward to – ERIS MORN!!!! & Cross-Save

  • Microsoft and Sony
  • It was announced in the previous week that Sony and Microsoft are working on AI and cloud technology
  • This move makes no sense due to the continue gaming war the two companies have been in.
  • …then again it is possible Sony and Microsoft are wising up to what Google is planning to bring to the table.
  • When it comes to AI and cloud platforms Sony does not have either so it had to choose between the big 3 – Largest Amazon, Establish Microsoft, or the Youngin Google. It went with its mortal enemy
  • This move also took the PlayStation team by surprise but according to their leadership this has not changed any plans about their future console
  • We could be looking at the beginning of the end for console gaming.
  • We could be coming to a time when if you do want low latency input for competitive gaming then you buy a PC type device….if not you sign up for one of the game streaming services that will be available.
  • Microsoft console announcement could have some of the “cloud gaming attributes” as part of the architecture. – We shall see at E3
  • Side – note our next podcast will be an E3 pre-show where we will be talking about our expectation and wants to happen at this year’s E3

  • Epic
  • Let’s set the scene – Stream has had a monopoly on the digital gaming distribution market and launcher since it’s launch in 2003.
  • For a while it was the only one launcher to rule them all – Steam had a monopoly when it came to a game launcher platform
  • Some popped up but those were only for their own launchers – Blizzard, Origin, Bethesda
  • Then Epic came along and decided to put their massive cash flow from Fortnite to use – Making a universal game launcher to compete with steam
  • Right out of the gate – it was a much better alternative for game developers as Epic would only take 12% compared to the current Steam rate of 30%
  • Some companies immediately started deployment of their game on Epic and Steam but at the same time Epic was immediately paying companies money to gain exclusive or limited exclusive rights
  • And this is where the controversy takes place
  • The hate against EPIC has been extreme….
  • Main points of “HATE” that Epic takes
    • “Unfair” Exclusives
    • The store has less function than Steam
    • Rumor of the “Less secure – security” platform
    • People have been used to the convenient monopoly the Stream produced

Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker

The first trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX — which we now know is titled The Rise of Skywalker is finally here! This is the final film in the Skywalker saga which was unveiled at the Star Wars Celebration on Friday 4/12.

Episode IX will pick up years after the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and the remaining rebels of the Resistance have not only survived the onslaught from the First Order, but have reinforced their ranks. They’ll once again take on Kylo Ren’s First Order, but they may also face an old enemy based off the new teaser we got to see. This new trailer shows us wreckage from the Death Star and everyone got a surprise with the ominous laugh of Emperor Palpatine!

Another surprise was Luke Skywalker’s voiceover in the teaser which says “No One’s Ever Really Gone” — perhaps this was a warning, or this may have been to comfort Rey with something she was going through at the time. From the trailer, this movie seems to be about the new generation and what path is ahead of them. Are they getting ready to face the greatest evil the universe has ever seen? Are they ready, and will they be prepared for casualties, loss, emotions, and a final stand?

Will We See Luke Once More?

We all saw Luke pass at the end of The Last Jedi, but death in the Star Wars universe isn’t always the final end.  With this new trailer, we don’t see Luke, but we did get to hear him speaking. What did Luke mean when he said “No One’s Ever Really Gone” and will we get to see a Skywalker force ghost appearance in the new film? One can hope for sure, but it does bring up a lot of questions as to what Luke knew before he passed and what about Rey? Could the title Rise of the Skywalker actually be referring to Rey? Was Kylo Ren lying about Rey’s parents; if he was lying, it could mean Rey is part of the actual Skywalker family.

Has Emperor Palpatine Returned?

The only thing we have to go on here is the evil laugh we heard at the end of the trailer, which leaves almost unlimited room for speculation. As we all know Emperor Palpatine was killed at the end of Return of the Jedi, or was he? We never actually saw a dead body after Vader thew him down the reactor in the Death Star. Even if they did show us a body, I don’t think that truly means he was dead. All the films have established that anyone powerful enough in the Force could come back as a force ghost to speak with the living.

This has been seen throughout the Star Wars films with multiple Jedi who have returned to speak to Luke throughout the series to pass on wisdom, or offer some type of guidance. Could we now see Luke doing the same to Rey as Yoda once did for Luke?

What about Kylo’s Helmet?

While we don’t see Kylo wearing his helm in the trailer, we do see the helmet being fixed by someone. It’s clearly not Kylo himself repairing the helm due to the fuzzy hand we see. Who is this strange figure that seems to be caring for Kylo’s helm?

Wreckage Of A Death Star?

During the trailer we see our heroes come upon a huge chunk of what looks to be a destroyed Death Star in the ocean of a strange planet.

The Death Star.

There were two Death Stars that we know about from the films, and even more from all of the books. One was blown up in deep space, and the other was destroyed near the forest moon of Endor. Could this be a third Death Star that we never saw in the films….or from what I personally think….this is actually wreckage on Endor itself. We’ve never actually seen Endor in the movies, so we don’t have a way to visually compare the planet from the trailer to the canonical Endor. We also know that The Force Awakens almost featured a scene where Rey traveled to Endor to learn about Jedi history but that never made it to the final film.

We will have to wait until Christmas to finally see what surprises the Star Wars universe holds for the Skywalkers…..and their final story in the film series.

Show Notes

  • Our Snapshot Opinion of the Game
    • Anthem feels like Mass Effect made a child with Division and they were raised by Iron Man in the world of Monster Hunter
    • This game is not Destiny, it is not The Division, it is not Warframe.  The one thing we can comment on is the quality of the game.
  • Publisher Concerns
    • EA – Need we say more
    • VIP weekend DEMO didn’t have a good start
    • Will they learn, and correct the issues presented during the demos – It seems like they did with the Open DEMO as server problems were much less but we did experience issues the first day
    • There will be microtransaction but only for cosmetics and all cosmetics in the game can be bought with a certain in-game currency – 0 items in the market currently affect your gameplay
  • Technical Issues
    • Not a technical issue but the naming could have been changed from DEMO to BETA and a lot of the PR would have been addressed – Community would have been more forgiving
    • Server problems
    • Connection Issues – for the VIP demo only
    • Lag – Mostly in VIP demo
    • Audio problems
  • Overall Feel
    • Combat
      • Good mix of strategy and learning needed
      • Teamwork oriented
      • Solo queue play is very challenging as you really need to be able to communicate with your team
      • Some mid-level tier enemies were extremely tanky.  EA will need to look at balancing the enemies vs. player shield levels
    • Loot
      • One massive key to a shooter-looter is the LOOT and it’s got to be good
      • The loot in this game was exciting and fun to get your hands on
    • Weapons
      • Good mix of weapons to use
      • Depending on what types of weapons you prefer there could be a bit of learning curve with the weapons
      • Situational
      • Each class should have a special weapon they can use, which I think would give just a bit more edge and hone in each class for specific fighting styles.  Would allow players to have a bit more customization with how they choose weapons for each of the slots
      • A lot of the weapons had the same look, sound and feel which made it hard to figure out what to use
    • Skills
      • Learning curve
      • Some skills felt very underwhelming in specific fights
      • Situational
      • Skills are somewhat customizable
    • Movement
      • Really felt like a console game that was ported to PC with how the controls were laid out
      • Flight and Underwater Movement was a massive learning curve
      • Overall movement was top notch and felt very smooth for the most part
    • Environments
      • Beautifully made worlds
      • Challenging to navigate first time in as most new worlds are

Show Notes

  • Captain Marvel
    • Release Date: March 8, 2019
    • What We Know So Far
      • Marvel’s first female-led superhero film will revolve around the most powerful character in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.  This iteration of Captain Marvel will focus on the character of Carol Danvers, whose adventures are earthbound but whose powers are based in the cosmic realm. Joss Whedon wanted to introduce the character at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Marvel didn’t want to bring Captain Marvel into the MCU fully formed without first telling her origin story.
      • This film will be a prequel to the MCU, taking place in the 90s and bringing back Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson for the first time since The Avengers. Moreover, the comics characters the Skrulls are the villains with a story revolving around the Skrull vs. Kree war, which explains why Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou are reprising their roles from Guardians of the Galaxy as Kree. That could have major repercussions leading into Avengers 4, but Captain Marvel will also give us a two-eyed Nick Fury. Jude Law is set to co-star as the alien Mar-Vell.
  • Hellboy
    • Release Date: April 12, 2019
    • What We Know So Far:
      • Hellboy creator Mike Mignola came up with the story for this new reboot as opposed to moving forward with the third film in Guillermo del Toro‘s established franchise, and Stranger Things standout David Harbour fills the role of the titular character for director Neil Marshall, who helmed The Descent and a couple standout Game of Thrones episodes. The film has loosely based the Rise of the Blood Queen arc with Milla Jovovich filling that villainous role, while Ian McShane plays Trevor Bruttenholm and Daniel Dae Kim fills the part of Ben Daimio. Oh, and this is 100% Rated R.
  • Shazam
    • Release Date: April 5, 2019
    • What We Know So Far:
      • Making his superhero movie debut, Dwayne Johnson opted to take on the role of the villainous Black Adam in this DC comics adaptation, but Warner Bros. subsequently decided to hold Johnson for a separate Black Adam movie so Shazam will be all about that hero. Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg is directing, and this served as Warner Bros.’ next DCEU film in production after Aquaman.
      • Zachary Levi is the title superhero character, with Asher Angel playing his boy counterpart Billy Batson. The story revolves around a young boy who can transform into a powerful superhero simply by uttering the word “Shazam!”. Mark Strong is playing the film’s villain, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
  • Avengers Endgame
    • Release Date: April 26, 2019
    • What We Know So Far:
      • The conclusion to the epic two-part Avengers storyline will close out Marvel’s ambitious MCU with a bang. The title, Avengers: Endgame, has finally been revealed, if not the story, confirmed cast, etc.
  • Dark Phoenix
    • Release Date: June 7, 2019
    • What We Know So Far:
      • The sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse has been firmed up as Dark Phoenix, which will tackle the beloved Jean Grey story arc from the comics that was first broached (and botched) in X-Men: The Last Stand. X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg has penned the script and is making his directorial debut on the project, which also stars Jessica Chastain as maybe the villain Lilandra and is bringing back pretty much the entire main X-Men cast. The movie won’t be skimping on the weirdness, as it’s been confirmed that the story will find the X-Men finally venturing to space. Hans Zimmer is coming out of superhero movie retirement to compose the score.
  • Spider-Man Far From Home
    • Release Date: July 5, 2019
    • What We Know So Far:
      • Not much. Bolstered by the positive response to Homecoming, director Jon Watts returned to direct, and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who came on to rewrite Homecoming, wrote the script.
      • Jake Gyllenhaal plays comics villain Mysterio, although Mysterio is a good guy in this movie. Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders also co-star, adding a S.H.I.E.L.D. presence to the whole shebang.
  • The New Mutants
    • Release Date: August 2, 2019
    • What We Know So Far:
      • Writer/director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) has been attached to direct New Mutants for some time now, but 20th Century Fox finally moved this thing into production after the success of Deadpool and Logan. The film is both YA-esque and horror-tinged in tone, revolving around a group of much younger mutants in the X-Men universe than the adults from the proper X-Men movies. The story will also ditch traditional superhero costumes and supervillains in favor of telling a story about these young mutants locked up together in some facility, mirroring a horror haunted house vibe. James McAvoy has been rumored to be reprising his role as Professor X in the film.
      • However, just a few months before the film was set to hit theaters in April 2018, Fox pushed the movie back 10 months to 2019 to take over Gambit‘s previous spot. No official explanation was given, but rumors swirl that Fox tested the film and decided it “wasn’t scary enough,” so some additional photography may be in order.
  • Joker
    • Release Date: October 4, 2019
    • What We Know So Far:
      • This is a weird one. In the wake of Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, and with Wonder Woman proving to be a massive success, Warner Bros. began changing up its plans for the DCEU. One idea is to kickstart a new arm at WB that will develop and produce one-off DC Comics adaptations not connected to the DC Extended Universe, meaning filmmakers can come in, try something really radical, and not have to worry about setting up a franchise or fitting into an established timeline. The first of these to hit the trades was a Joker origin movie directed by The Hangover and War Dogs filmmaker Todd Phillips, who is co-writing the script with The Fighter scribe Scott Silver. The idea is to craft something in the vein of Taxi Driver, a gritty, hard-boiled crime picture set in the early 1980s.
      • The lead actor would not be Jared Leto, but someone else entirely—WB reportedly wanted Leonardo DiCaprio, and when he passed they moved on to Joaquin Phoenix, who signed on after prolonged negotiations. The movie began filming in September 2018 and wrapped in December.
  • Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
    • Release Date: February 7, 2020
    • What We Know So Far:
      • This project hit the fast track at Margot Robbie‘s urging, as the Harley Quinn actress lobbied Warner Bros. an DC to put together a female-centric DC movie based on the Birds of Prey comics. The studio not only put this together but has Cathy Yan in line to direct based on the strength of her indie feature Dead Pigs. The idea is to potentially introduce a few DC comics characters in this film, like Batgirl, which would then pave the way to their own solo films a la Black Panther and Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.
      • This project is a priority for Warner Bros. and could begin filming at the end of 2018. Jurnee Smollett-Bell plays Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Huntress, and Rosie Perez is The Question, while Ewan McGregor plays villain Black Mask.
  • Gambit
    • Release Date: March 13, 2020
    • What We Know So Far:
      • Channing Tatum has been keen on playing the X-Men mutant for a while now, and 20th Century Fox finally pulled the trigger on a standalone movie for the fan-favorite Cajun. Production had initially been slated to begin Fall 2015, but when it was pushed back to early 2016, director Rupert Wyatt abruptly dropped out due to personal reasons. Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) subsequently signed on to direct, and while producer Simon Kinberg told us the film will be a heist picture and a “sexy thriller”, the film was pulled from its October 2016 release date and sat in limbo for a bit.
      • Gambit was officially back on track with Pirates of the Caribbean and A Cure for Wellness director Gore Verbinski taking the helm and a Valentine’s Day 2019 release date, but Verbinski dropped out two months before filming was set to begin and Fox is once again on the hunt for a director. Joshua Zetumer (Patriot’s Day, RoboCop) penned the most recent draft of the script, but this entire film could be scrapped or reconceived once the Disney/Fox deal goes through.
  • Wonder Woman 1984
    • Release Date: June 5, 2020
    • What We Know So Far:
      • Very little, but Wonder Woman marked a major turning point for the DCEU with wildly positive reviews and massive box office, so anticipation is high. Patty Jenkins returns to direct a story that takes place in the year 1984 against the backdrop of the Cold War (timely!), with Kristen Wiig playing the villain Cheetah and Chris Pine somehow reprising his role as Steve Trevor. The film was originally scheduled for release in November 2019, but Warner Bros. opted to push it into the summer corridor of 2020.
  • Black Widow
    • Release Date: TBA
    • What We Know So Far:
      • A standalone Black Widow movie has long been requested by fans, and Marvel Studios is finally pulling the trigger—although all official details will be under wraps until Avengers 4 hits theaters so as not to spoil how that film wraps up. Scarlett Johansson handpicked indie filmmaker Cate Shortland to direct after an exhaustive search, and the most recent draft of the script was written by Jac Schaeffer. Early word is that this movie takes place before the events of The Avengers, but again all confirmed details are under lock and key at the moment.
  • Suicide Squad 2
    • Release Date: TBA
    • What We Know So Far:
      • David Ayer definitely isn’t coming back to direct this sequel, and Warner Bros. looked at some intriguing names for his replacement. Mel Gibson was approached towards the end of 2016, but Warner Bros. eventually moved on and offered the movie to Jaume Collet-Serra of The Shallows and Non-Stop fame to take the helm, only to see him pass. Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) was subsequently set to direct, but when his take came out similar to the plot of the Birds of Prey movie—which is going into production first—he became frustrated and moved on.
      • Subsequently, Warner Bros. tapped former Guardians of the Galaxy 3 filmmaker James Gunn to write a script from scratch and potentially direct. The idea is for Gunn to craft whatever kind of story he wants, which means we could be in for a complete reboot of this franchise.
  • The Flash
    • Release Date: TBA
    • What We Know So Far:
      • Miller made his brief debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but he’s a fully fledged star of the Justice League. After tasking Phil Lord and Chris Miller with penning a treatment only to see them head off to direct the Han Solo Star Wars film (and then leave that), the studio subsequently tapped Seth Grahame-Smith to make his directorial debut on the superhero picture. Alas, after the disappointing reception to Batman v Superman, Warner Bros. opted to change course and parted ways with Grahame-Smith, seeking to find a more established filmmaker in his stead. They settled on Dope filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa, working from Grahame-Smith’s script that was a buddy film of sorts between Flash and Cyborg. But after months of developing the project and with casting underway (Dopestandout Kiersey Clemons landed the role of Iris West), Famuyiwa exited the project in late October.
      • This put the March 2018 release date in doubt, as it was dependent upon production getting underway in early 2017. Miller was then due to start filming Fantastic Beasts 2 in mid-2017, which would push production of The Flash to late 2017 or early 2018, meaning the March 2018 date was impossible. The film does now have a pair of directors though. Names like Robert Zemeckis were bandied about early on, but WB settled on Vacation and Game Night helmers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to direct Flashpoint, who also co-wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming.
      • Warner Bros. announced at Comic-Con 2017 that this Flash movie will be an adaptation of the Flashpoint time travel comics storyline, which could give WB a way to reboot the DCEU somewhat. But it’s unclear if that’s still the plan.
      • The long road to getting The Flash movie off the ground hit yet another speed bump in October 2018, when it was revealed that production is being delayed from Spring 2019 to late 2019 due to the fact that the script wouldn’t be ready in time and Miller once again has to shoot Fantastic Beasts 3 starting in July 2019. As a result, The Flash movie isn’t expected to hit theaters anytime before 2021 now.

The Review

Little Nightmares is a wonderful 2D horror puzzle platformer that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

When you begin the game you will be in charge of guiding a small character called Six through The Maw (an ocean facility with a slow reveal of its awful purpose) loaded with death hazards and tons of puzzles.  Being a fairly short game around five hours long, Little Nightmares feels a tad too short, as the implied scale of the game suggests there was more of the Maw to see.

Little Nightmares’ has some very similar related games like Limbo, and Inside, not just because of the child in danger, but in how cleverly it brings together puzzle design and storytelling. Every enemy, every room, every meat grinder you use to make a rope of sausages to swing from, contributes to the story of The Maw and Six’s survival.

The Maw itself is something like a death trap dollhouse.  The developer Tarsier knows exactly how to bring a mix of suspense and horror and still keep you interested in the story. I don’t recall a single jump scare in the entirety of Little Nightmares’ runtime, but I know I flinched and had that uneasy feeling most of the game.

Six is thrust into a world that is lit like a haunted house, regularly forcing you to flick open Six’s only possession, a tiny cigarette lighter. This place – with its nurseries full of restlessly sleeping children, curious packages transported by hook, and some truly disgusting visitors is strangely functional as a world to bring horror.  All these details and mixes bring one of the best gaming locations I’ve seen in years.

Now for some of the negatives of the games which is a shame as it’s quite a wonderful looking world, but Little Nightmares does have some issues.  One of the biggest problems is the movement of an almost 3D platformer. The slightest move at the wrong angle or direction can send you plummeting into the abyss of death. Likewise, a few of its instant-death obstacles are the kind of trial-and-error puzzling that become frustrating to finish. Pair that with inconsistent checkpoints and ridiculous long load times (a trade-off presumably made to allow entire chapters of the game to be played seamlessly).

Overall those occasional issues, though, more than made up for in the constant pleasure of exploration, which is enhanced by some subtle tricks. Environments are often built just bigger than the camera’s field of view…..just urging you to look into the crevices of this game. The camera itself moves with an ever-so-slight delay and sways with The Maw’s ocean rocking, giving the impression of not being a perfect lens which makes for an interesting experience.

This game has much more to enjoy, from Six and her lighter, to the boss battles that require some thought and tactic. Little Nightmares will make you re-evaluate where all the baddies could jump out from and at what point will you pulled into the black abyss of death.  It’s a well-designed game with lovely animations, impressive sound engineering, a world with breathtaking visuals, and a story that pulls you in.
