Destiny 2: Shadowkeep Review

SHadowkeep-3Let’s talk Destiny 2’s latest expansion Shadowkeep for a bit seeing how it launched just over a week ago and the community is quite busy with its current activities. Shadowkeep hit the market with one goal in mind and that was to make its place known it was a place for the hardcore community that’s been with the franchise for years.

Bungie came in with some extremely important changes to the sandbox and made heavy focus around customization, the MMO/RPG mechanics, high-end loot, and giving you more control over building that perfect killing machine.  Shadowkeep is doing so many things right and moving Destiny 2 in the absolute right direction and setting the bar high for the future of the game. We’ve seen a massive change in the game over the last few years especially with expansions like Forsaken, as Bungie seems determined to set things right and produce the game they really wanted and Shadowkeep is by no means an exception to that.

Everything this time around is super complex with the new customization system they’ve introduced for your Guardian.  Bungie has made a ton of tweaks on everything that has helped streamline the end experience on things such as armor, the menus and quest tab, the additional progression systems and how they provide more rewards and the customization options for those hardcore Guardians. For us veterans of the game who truly enjoy the “GRIND” of improving our Guardian and chasing that end game loot and experience then I’d say Bungie nailed it.

ff1c90f4cfbb.jpgThat’s not to say there aren’t still hurdles and walls to climb because there are and on of the biggest is for new players entering the game for the first time, or even a returning player who has been out for some time.  The amount of material that has been given for someone new in the game to learn and process is absolutely overwhelming such as the leveling systems, upgrade methods, power grinds, currencies and all the tidbits in between. Shadowkeep ultimately is the right direction for the game but only makes that problem of where do I start if I’m a new person worse…..I’ve been an avid passionate player of Destiny since the alpha days of Destiny 1’s launch so I’ve grabbed a hold of this crazy train and won’t be letting go anytime soon.  But for a new player, I can see where it would be harder to jump in at this point and time and know where to begin or what to do.

Destiny’s new armor system is absolutely amazing from a customization standpoint and downright almost MMORPG like in a way.  It ultimately gives us gun-slinging, alien killing, nerds another level to geek out on while making the perfect killing machine of a Guardian.  The new armor system brings a level of accomplishment and satisfaction the game has been missing for a long time but also has a level of complication to it, but not all additions in Shadowkeep make the game feel more complicated.  Take the new finishers that were added which are just a fun way to execute an enemy and give it some flare.  Finishers also provide a nice tactical benefit like damage resistance during the animation and the ability to instantly kill enemies at a distance, since most finishers have a large range.

Destiny-2-Where-to-Find-Vex-Fanatics_1200x500.jpgWhen I jumped in for Shadowkeep’s campaign I instantly fell in love with the story as we get to walk alongside an old veteran of the game, Eris Morn.  The story has us visiting Earth’s moon once again to stop a terrible evil that has been unleashed which turns into a story of suspense, and some extremely action-packed moments.  With the moon being Shadowkeep’s main setting most of us veterans should feel right at home, but things definitely don’t look the same since the last time our Guardians were on the lunar surface.  We first spawn in to see massive gray craters that have been split open, revealing these green ominous lights and rocky hills that have formed all over the surface.  Along with the Hive doing their evil magic tricks around the moon, we now have ghostly phantoms located in every corner looming around and even calling out to you for missions which brings a fresh vibe to the new/old zones we all fell in love with from Destiny 1.

Though Shadowkeep’s story has some amazing chapters and great moments that engage you as a player, Bungie is setting everything up for the much larger story still to come.  We have a couple different story timelines all happening at once which honestly is a great change for me personally as you have the main overarching campaign with Eris and the Darkness, but you also have the Season of Undying storyline with Ikora at the heart of things along with an old enemy friend the Undying Mind. I’m still hoping some of the planned upcoming content like the new dungeon will pull some loose plot ends together a little tighter. Bungie has definitely made a great position for themselves to unveil this huge overall story plot across multiple years and I hope we keep getting content just like Shadowkeep through it all.

destiny-2-garden-raid.jpgShadowkeep also has a massive endgame list of activities to be had as well along with the new raid Garden of Salvation that just launched a few days ago, and the Vex Offensive which is one of the best events Bungo has ever made. Bungie has definitely narrowed the available sources of “powerful drops,” which dropped like candy before Shadowkeep and helped you level up, but now the systems are more focused on new content and the staples of Destiny which are Strikes, Crucible, and Gambit and that true endgame content. The new artifact system is a great addition that also makes understanding that endgame goal and power level just a bit more hardcore and confusing in a way.  Again, Bungie is adding all this content in for a true RPG experience and honestly has done a fantastic job bringing the new systems into place.

Shadowkeep truly is all about the “GRIND” so for the faint-hearted who don’t enjoy repeating activities or chasing that endgame, this expansion is going to be a rough place for you to have enjoyment.  The good news here is that the content Shadowkeep does add is largely great, even if it feels like there’s too little of it, and Bungie has a content calendar that promises more coming in the future, all of which is built into the $30 cost of this expansion.

07-09-2019-destiny-2-vex-offensive.jpgThe new raid, Garden of Salvation sends us back on a quest to take on the Vex once again and it looks to be packed full of new mechanics, puzzles, secrets and more. Along with the raid we now have a new Vex themed event called the Vex Offensive that I became a huge fan of.  It’s a new arena-style event that is quick, fast-paced, and a decent loot grind for a team of six guardians looking to have some fun killing the milk infused aliens. Shadowkeep as a whole has done a ton to improve Destiny 2 and has given it’s fans a massive taste of what’s coming in future expansions and content updates.  There is a massive grind at the end of that campaign and story so get ready to pull out those big boy pants and grind that endgame content.  This will make things a bit tougher for those new Guardians coming in for the first time because of the added complexity that truly caters to the hardcore Guardians that like the grind game. I’m excited for the direction Bungie has brought things and has set the story up to develop over the next few years.  I truly am excited to see where and how Bungie can continue to roll this crazy train out and what they have in store for all the Guardians out there.

Destiny 2 Battle Pass (Season Pass)

Destiny franchise director Luke Smith, Bungie revealed how seasons will work in Destiny 2’s third year; including Shadowkeep and New Light this fall.

Each season has a free or paid version (“10 bucks” each, according to Smith), similar to battle passes in games like Fortnite or Dauntless. The first season of Year 3, Season of the Undying, comes bundled with Shadowkeep (players can purchase it separately as well).

ROTATING ACTIVITIES

The new season will focus on changing Destiny 2’s world every three months. In Season of the Undying, players will open a Vex gate, creating a new activity and rewards. Three months later, players will close the gate, end the activities, and set Season of the Dawn in motion. Including Season of the Undying and Season of Dawn, Year 3 will contain four seasons.

Bungie believes that removing activities each season is the only way to make the game feel like it’s evolving. “We believe that Destiny will grow even better when the world state can change and that the best Destiny stories are the ones where ‘you had to be their when…,’” Smith said.

But weapons and rewards for the seasons won’t be gone forever. While Smith didn’t elaborate on how players should expect weapons they’ve missed to return within about six months. However, Smith was clear that there will be periods where players have no current means of acquiring some past items.

ARTIFACTS

On top of seasons rotating activities, the new seasonal Artifact will create individual player growth each season. Artifacts are free for all players, and Guardians can level them up during the season. Each level comes with uncapped bonus power that extends across a player’s account.

Players will also unlock new and powerful mods through the Artifact. After they unlock a mod, Guardians can slot them into weapons and armor for the remainder of the season. The goal is for the mods to change the way players interact with the world and create unique effects against everyday enemies and bosses.

At the end of each season, the seasonal mods and bonus power will reset. Players will earn a new Artifact for the next season, and start the process over again.

SEASON PASS

The Season Pass is a new idea to Destiny, but similar to battle passes in other games where players can earn rewards on a free and premium track depending on whether they own the season or not. Each season comes with 100 ranks, and the experienced players earn at max level counts toward their pass.

Free players can earn some powerful items and rewards through the season pass, but the real goodies come with the $10 price tag. Bungie laid out the rewards players can expect in Season of the Undying’s season pass as an example.

Season Pass owners get access to a new seasonal activity, the Vex Offensive, which includes:

  • Four Legendary Weapon drops
  • Additional weekly and daily bounties
  • Additional weekly challenges with powerful rewards

A new weapon quest for an Exotic Bow, Leviathan’s Breath

  • Exclusive to Season Pass owners

A new Exotic Hand Cannon, Eriana’s Vow

  • Awarded on Rank 35 of the free track
  • Awarded on Rank 1 of the premium track

Three seasonal Legendary armor sets (one for each class)

  • Collect a complete set during the first 25 ranks of the free track
  • On the premium track, you get all three sets on Rank 1
  • These also drop within the Vex Offensive seasonal activity
  • If you want versions with higher stat tiers, you’ll need to play Vex Offensive to earn them

Some additional premium track rewards:

  • Three universal ornament armor sets (one for each class)
  • An Exotic weapon ornament for Eriana’s Vow
  • Two Legendary weapon ornaments
  • A new finisher
  • An Exotic emote
  • An Exotic ship

In this episode: We cover the recent resurgence of players in the Destiny community, how the state of Destiny is keeping those players engaged, and finishing with the top things we are looking forward to when Shadowkeep hits in September

Click to Listen: S311 – Destiny Resurgence

Show Notes

  • Resurgence –
    • Since the release of Forsaken we have seen a steady decline in the want to play the game – a slight bump in players as new content was released but still a decline
    • But then 3 things took place that combined has revitalized the community to new levels.
      • 1.) Bungie split from Activision
        • This was a huge want from the community to finally split from the “greedy corporates” at Activision
        • Bungie is now free to build a game the way they want to
        • This does not mean Eververse will go away as to keep producing “free” content you need some way to keep the lights on
      • 2.) All new items and content announced for Shadowkeep
        • New Light
          • Some people may say that Free-to-play is a  sign of a game failing but the way that Bungie is implementing is more like a demo but people will still be able to play multiplayer with friends
        • Cross-Save
          • Every multi-platform game to date has wanted this.  We all have friends on different platforms and want to play with them without having to start over.  Cross-save fixes this and will be a continued plus for new players coming into Destiny.
          • This also pairs REALLY well with Destiny 2 on Stadia too as we now have an on the go version of the game that we can just continue playing our characters
        • Transmogrification sorta – AKA Armour 2.0
          • Just yes – we finally get to wear the gear we want and slot the stats we want
        • Moon’s Haunted – Story
          • We are going back to the Moon!
          • Looks like we may go up against some ghosts of the past
      • 3.) Season of Opulence
        • The biggest item that has hit with this season has been the Menagerie.  A multi-boss raid-lite that has built-in matchmaking
        • Along with this, and with benefit from a bug, this event has been a go-to grind because of the loot rewards and the ability to craft the weapons how you want it giving the player just the right amount of control.
  • State of the Game
    • People are loving the grind for all things PVE
    • PVP is not in a horrible spot but still is rough
    • There is so much to do if you have not been keeping up and so much content to go through but almost all of it is really good and worth the work
    • So much lore to work through and very engaging storylines to keep up with
    • -Personal Experience-
  • Tops items we are looking forward to – ERIS MORN!!!! & Cross-Save

All Things Geekery Podcast S2E15 – The Endgame

Welcome to Season 2 Episode 15 of the All Things Geekery Podcast: The Endgame

In this episode, we’re talking about the new trailer for Avengers 4 and all the HYPE along with it!  We’re also sharing our thoughts on Destiny 2’s latest DLC; Black Armory and the new Dawning event that just hit!

Show Notes

  • Avengers 4 – Endgame
    • It was a great trailer that showed nothing
    • Why is Tony Stuck without Nebula
    • Could we see a possible introduction of Captain Marvel in this film, by her finding Tony Stark floating in space ie: She rescues Iron Man
    • Thanos is still enjoying his peace on the farm
    • Cap is back to his Winter Soldier look but all black – everyone is in mourning
    • We get a small glimpse of Hawkeye, but he isn’t wielding his famous bow this time, instead, he has a sword
    • Ant-man makes it out of the Quantum zone
    • Could we see the Quantum Zone introduce alternate timelines to the story
    • This trailer honestly brings up more questions than answers and the film doesn’t release until April 2019
  • Black Armory Thoughts / Controversy
    • First content addition(critical call out) that did not include story mission and instead added new “Escalation protocol” type events called forges
    • Right off the bat, we could tell this was endgame content
    • It was odd not to have something like that was a bridge between those that were still leveling up to 600.  The starting forge was recommended to be 620-630. So this left a lot of people behind in the experiencing the Black Armoy content.
    • With that said how does that compare to a game like World of Warcraft the when new content releases it  – most times only the top level get to immediately play it with other still having to work through the other content
    • Now Destiny is a different game so bridging could have been made
    • The is where most of the controversy was and how some of the player bases reacted
  • The Raid –  Different, New Mechanics, a Good change to the raids we have seen before with sparrows now an addition and needed skill in the raid along with tanks.
    • In prep for the raid most had already hit max level as the raid dropped – with that said all the mechanics were in place to make it for a raid fun
    • There have been idea floated around that level cap should be locked until raid drops and then grind happens – but there is always worry about people “rigging” the system with having loot pre-staged to pop to gain the level advantage
  • The Dawning Returns
    • Eva Levante returns after a very long hiatus from the game
    • The dawning event brings a new feature never seen before in Destiny, or at least never in this style.  We now have the ability to cook items for specific quests and rewards through Eva Levante’s crafting oven
    • We’ve got more triumphs to go after, new loots, new winter-themed gear which has been fairly engaging to grind for
    • There are 16 cooking recipes you have to learn to earn triumphs, and also a hidden recipe/triumph for master Rahoul where you have to combine the wrong ingredients
    • There is also an exotic quest tied to a new Dawning themed sparrow – Good call back to the age of triumph armor and all the unlocks we had to do for it to reach its full potential – Why do they not do more of this?

Show Notes

  • Red Dead Redemption 2
    • Rockstar knocks it out of the park again with a game that is deep in story and also immerses you in the wild west of America in 1899
    • The verdict is out on this game and the fans are calling it one of the greatest games of the modern age.
    • You can expect a very lengthy story of around 60 hours of gameplay with some of the best storytelling Rockstar has ever done
    • Rockstar went all out on the level of detail this game brings the players as it is leaps and bounds above anything else they have done
    • The world is extremely large and will make any open world MMO’er feel right at home for questing, exploring, and make completionist wonder if they should quit as there is that much to do in the game
  • Red Dead Online
    • GTA 5 but in the wild west – and that’s not a bad thing –
    • A lot of the missions are an extension of what we would have done in the story but if you happen to be caring something of value – other players can kill you can take it for themselves.
    • There will be microtransactions but currently, the only thing that would apply would be gold bars which are used for cosmetics only
    • Different multiplayer mode that mimics modes we saw in GTA 5
    • And of course, no modern multiplier is complete without a battle royal mode
  • Fallout 76
    • Now when you do have a full team of people all running quests together and fighting off the wasteland it is fun and you do not notice some of the negatives.
    • With that said Fallout 76 is a shell of a game of what was promised to us – Bethesda has said fixes and content are on the way but right now we have another No Man’s Sky on our hands
    • It was supposed to be an answer to all the prayers for the fallout fan base which was Fallout game we have known to love but multiplayer It was not
    • Sure it had that Fallout feel of a game but it had and still has a lot of downsides
    • No non-robot NPC
    • Because of no NPC, the story is locked away in audio logs and notes found throughout the world
    • No decision dialogue
    • Limited building storage
    • A LOT of bugs
    • No Mods Support
  • Destiny 2 – Season 5 (Season of the Forge / Black Armory)
    • Black Armory will be releasing on December 4th – Must own the Annual Pass
    • Story-wise we are being tasked with a new mission to go rediscover 4 weapon forges lost during the golden age
    • The Hype is real – and yes we know we have been stuck in this before but the success of Forsaken has us encouraged
    • New higher light level – Increase of 50 Power Levels
    • New powerful and unique exotics
    • New areas that we have never been able to access or explore before
    • Soft cap will still remain at 500
    • Players under 550 should see an increase in Prime Engram drops, and receive higher power bumps to help them reach end game content a bit easier
    • Powerful reward sources will remain consistent for anyone who owns D2 Forsaken
    • New powerful gear rewards introduced for anyone who owns the Annual Pass
    • New “RAID” called the Scourge of the Past “Bit of a Spoiler”
      • Scourge of the Past tells it’s own story and is not related to the Dreaming City storyline
      • Not as large as a full Raid, but much larger than any Raid Lair ever created
      • Comparable to mechanics from Rise of the Machine
      • Scourge of the Past will release December 7th @  9am with a recommended power level of 640 but no minimum power level to play
      • Must have the annual pass to enter the Raid
    • New Power Level of 650
    • No annual pass required to reach this power level
    • Veteran of the Hunt Bundle
      • Bungie is releasing a new bundle which includes shaders, emblems, emotes, and consumables
      • To get this bundle you had to have played Destiny 2 forsaken before October 16th
      • This bundle was going to drop with Black Armory but is now going to drop with a later update coming December 18th
    • The Fate of Xur in Season 5
      • Bungie did mention on Twitter that Xur will continue to offer his fated engrams through Season of the Forge – Those engrams will only drop Year 1 gear
      • Bungie did say they do have plans to address this vendor and bring Xur bounties at a later date

All Things Geekery Podcast – E10: The Destiny 2 PC BETA Review

destiny-2In this episode:

We breakdown our thoughts and impressions from the Destiny 2 PC Beta.

Show Notes:
We discuss our overall experience in the BETA, and what was new and exciting.

We talk through the insane graphics, running 60 FPS, glitches and more.

We talk classes, weapons, abilities, missions, strikes, and how they felt after the balancing fixes were put in place after from the console BETA.

We discuss PvP and break down the overall feel of solo and individual game play.

Overall you will here plenty of excitement between Victus and myself as we are huge Destiny nerds, and I’m sure you will even here us disagree on some topics, but that’s what makes a good discussion.
